webart Our Town

Our Town is a 1938 metatheatrical* three-act play by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens.

*Wilder sets the play in the actual theatre where it is being performed. The main character is the stage manager of the theatre who breaks the “fourth wall”** by directly addressing the audience, bringing in guest lecturers, fielding questions from the audience, and fills in playing some of the roles. The play is performed without a set on a mostly bare stage.

**When a scene is set indoors and three of the walls of its room are presented onstage, the “fourth wall” would run along the line dividing the room on stage from the auditorium (technically called the “proscenium”). The fourth wall is thus an invisible, imagined wall that separates the actors from the audience. While the audience can see through this “wall”, the actors act as if they cannot.

Bye Bye Birdie is a stage musical based on a book by Michael Stewart, with lyrics by Lee Adams and music by Charles Strouse. Originally titled Let’s Go Steady, Bye Bye Birdie is set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The rock star character’s name, “Conrad Birdie”, is word play on the name of Conway Twitty. Twitty is best remembered today for his long career as a country music star, but in the late 1950s, he was one of Presley’s rock ‘n’ roll rivals.

Auditions: The production is cast.
